A Guide to Safer Sex

Even though the AIDS crises is still a major concern, you can still enjoy sex if you understand the guidelines of what is safe, and what is not. The highest amounts of the HIV virus are found in blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. AVOID any activity that allows HIV infected fluids to transfer into another person's bloodstream. Saliva, urine, sweat and mucous are likely to contain some HIV, but not in sufficient amounts to infect another person. Anal sex without a condom, and the sharing of needles and syringes during drug use account for almost all cases of HIV transmission.

If you can have sex, you can talk about it. Some people practice safer sex with all of their partners; others may take certain risks depending on how much they know about themselves and their partners. If you have not talked to your partner about his or her HIV status, or if you have any reason to doubt what he or she tells you, assume that person may be HIV positive.

Safer Sex Practices

  • USE A LATEX CONDOM DURING VAGINAL SEX.

  • USE A LATEX CONDOM DURING ANAL SEX, AND WITHDRAW BEFORE EJACULATION FOR ADDED SAFETY. USE LATEX CONDOMS WITH A WATER BASED LUBRICANT (K-Y, ASTROGLIDE, PROBE, ETC.). OIL BASED LUBRICANTS (VASELINE, BABY OIL, HAND CREAM, ETC.) MAY CAUSE CONDOMS TO BREAK.

  • USE A CONDOM DURING ORAL SEX EVEN IF YOUR MALE PARTNER DOES NOT EJACULATE IN YOUR MOUTH...HIV FROM SEMEN OR PRE-EJACULATE MAY ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM THROUGH CUTS OR SORES IN YOUR MOUTH.

  • USE DENTAL DAMS FOR "GOING DOWN" ON A WOMAN, OR FOR ORAL-RECTAL CONTACT. DENTAL DAMS ARE LATEX SQUARES AND ARE AVAILABLE AT DRUGSTORES.

  • DO NOT BRUSH YOUR TEETH OR FLOSS JUST BEFORE PERFORMING ORAL SEX OR DEEP KISSING (USE MOUTHWASH FOR HYGIENE). ALWAYS BE AWARE OF CUTS OR SORES IN THE MOUTH.

  • KEEP SEMEN AND BLOOD (INCLUDING BLOOD FROM MENSTURATION, SHAVING, PIERCING) OUT OF THE MOUTH, RECTUM, OR VAGINA, AND AWAY FROM ANY BREAKS IN THE SKIN.

  • CONSIDER USING LATEX (MEDICAL) GLOVES AND LUBRICANT FOR DIGITAL INSERTION (FINGERING) OF THE RECTUM OR VAGINA, ESPECIALLY IF THERE ARE ANY VISIBLE CUTS OR SORES ON YOUR FINGERS OR HANDS.

  • DO NOT SHARE VIBRATORS OR SEX TOYS. USE CONDOMS ON SEX TOYS OR CLEAN THEM WITH SOAP AND HOT WATER, RUBBING ALCOHOL OR HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. FOLLOW MANUFACTURER'S USE AND CLEANING RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING OBJECTS WHICH PLUG INTO AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET.

  • ALCOHOL, AND OTHER DRUGS IMPAIR YOUR JUDGMENT. SOME PEOPLE CAN'T MAINTAIN SAFER SEX PRACTICES WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE.

MASSAGE, HUGGING, ROLE PLAYING, DIRTY TALK, MASTURBATION (SOLO OR WITH PARTNER) AND OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT DON'T ALLOW BLOOD OR SEMEN TO ENTER INTO THE BLOODSTREAM ARE SAFE.
