Most States in the U.S. maintain AIDS/STD Hotlines. If prompt scheduling and expeditious results are not a priority, you may wish to opt for free, or low cost testing. The trade-off is that you may need to wait for an appointment date and it can often take up to a week to receive your test result. State hotline personnel can provide you with information on locations, testing hours, and specific details regarding Alternative Test Sites (ATS) in your area. They also offer quality counseling and other HIV/STD resources and referrals. Some States restrict the age of a person who requests testing without parental consent; some States require mandatory reporting of persons who test positive for HIV and certain STD's. (Check with your State HIV/STD Hotline regarding age and reporting requirements.)
